New Kindle DX Features

The Kindle DX weighs 18.9 ounces, so it is quite a bit heavier than the Kindle Wi-Fi and the Kindle 3G + Wi-Fi. It is only slightly thicker than it smaller cousins and has a screen the measures 9.7 inches diagonally, compared to only 6 inches for the other two Kindles.

Screen glare is not a problem with the Kindle DX like it is with backlit screen. It has a paper-like screen that is easy to read even in bright sunlight and the latest version has 50 percent improved contrast. The new E Ink display has 1200 x 424 resolution at 150 pixels per inch, with 16 gray scale levels. This makes it easy to read in areas with little light such as your bed and can eliminate headaches caused by reading books in poorly lit areas.

You can rotate the Kindle DX and the display automatically changes from portrait to landscape if that helps your viewing. It also has eight font sizes to choose from. This makes this Kindle ideal for a wide range of reading material such as newspapers and magazines, and text books with lots of graphics. The built-in PDF reader makes it easy to read most scientific publications.

The Kindle DX automatically detects available Wi-Fi and 3G networks and so you can download your books and periodicals from anywhere. The download time will depend on the speed of the network you are using. All downloaded items are automatically archived so they can be downloaded again for free.

Memory capacity for the Kindle DX is 4GB, so now you can carry up to 3,500 books with you very easily in a small package.

The Kindle DX lets you search for information in any book in your library, as well as the complete Kindle store or the Internet where the service is available. Once you have found the information in your library, you can bookmark it, create notes, or highlight it.

The built-in dictionary makes it easy to find the definition of a word. All you have to do is move the cursor to the word and the definition will automatically display at the bottom of the screen.

A new voice option has been added that lets you listen to most of your documents if you do not feel like reading them. You can also move your favorite music to your Kindle DX so you can listen to background music while you are reading. Music features on the Kindle are still limited and the selection options leave something to be desired.

If the wireless is turned off, the battery can last for up to three weeks. With the wireless turn on, the battery will not last as long but could still last a week. The battery can be recharged through any USB port on your computer or via the included power adapter in about four and a half hours.

How good is the Warranty?

All Kindles come with a one-year warranty from the manufacturer. U.S. customers can get a 2-year extended warranty that protects against damage if the device is dropped or against failure due to normal wear and tear. This warranty stays with the device even if it changes owners.
